Aloha,
When working at Spectra-Physics I designed, built, and installed a
48" continuous polisher (planetary), for flat work. The lap surface
was 48" diameter, and it had three 18" diameter septums, and a 28"
diameter Zerodur conditioner plate in constant contact when
polishing. All were independantly powered, and driven in synchrophase.
The 48" spindle was powered by a 5 hp motor and was significantly
overpowered, rarely going over 10% of capacity, except at startup.
Hope this helps,
Stan
