Indeed... which is why I think in terms of using (for the example
of a machine with a blank on a turntable and a rotating tool on
top) separate motors for the two rotations, each with an individual
speed adjustment (and similarly for an oscillating stroke - a
separate motor) rather than any sort of gear arrangement to power
multiple motions of the machine from a common motor. The idea would
be to avoid anything with an inherent tendency to periodic
synchronization.
(I'm just poking at the problem in my head, seeing what shapes a
solution might take - I do have some fairly deep knowledge of
machinery, though I am a virgin at optical fabrication at this
point...)
