But it's simply not true. Go and have a good read of the Steward
mirror lab web site at Arizona uni. They are open about their methods
(very open if you speak to them or email them) and they don't
introduce any deliberate randomisation. What they do do is study the
computer generated polishing plan to make sure there are no simple
harmonic relations between two of the axis, but that is all last time I
spoke to anybody there. And their machines make superb mirrors.
