[ATM] Started Hogging
I started hogging today. What I am finding is that in 2-3 minutes I have a
smear of mud on the mirror. This is with about 1/2 teaspoon of 60 grit and
a teaspoon or two of water. I am using a plastic spoon to get the grit out
of the bag so that it is sort of measured. The water is a guess. The tool
does drag heavily if it gets too dry.
For the tool I took a 16 oz foam cup and cut the bottom out of it. I put a
bunch of 1/4" nuts on a board and put the cup over it. The nuts were held
in place with a thick smear of vaseline. I then packed the cup with
Quikrete #1240 fast set cement. This gives me a 2-3 pound tool that I can
get my hands on and put some pressure on. Four nuts fell out today so I am
going to epoxy them back in.
Score so far is about .022" deep in the center measured by slipping 6
layers of 20 pound paper under a straight edge. 7 layers makes the
straight edge rock. I have kept a band about 1" all around that has not
been touched. This is with 10-15 wets. The first few tries did not have
enough grit.
Target final depth is about .105" I am going to take it about .085-.090
deep (hopefully tomorrow) with the 60 grit and then cast the tool out of
the fast set cement. . After about a week I will epoxy coat it and glue
on the tiles. This is to make sure I don't lose any grit out of the tool.
For the bevel I used the piece of diamond grit sandpaper that came with the
blank. I backed this up with a piece of hardwood and wet sanded it in a
bucket. The whole job took about 15 minutes.
Does this sound about right?
