As to conventions, there are star parties all over the world over
the year's time and there are always, it seems, swap meets that
go with them.  Some swap meets are purely amateur stuff, like
Stellafance, and others are more commercial like RTMC where it
seems all the manufacturers are selling their wares all weekend
long.
You haven't mentioned where in the world you are so I can't point
to any specific star party tohat you should really attend, much
less any telescope making groups that may be around you.
