It certainly won't hurt the mirror, but I am not sure if it would
dissolve the residue or not. Using a sprayer on the faucet might
help, as the force of the water might remove it.
The residue shows up much more readily on a BVC mirror. I just
finished another large BVC mirror (using the same polish and pitch)
and it is merciless in how it shows surface defects, dust, residue,
and gunk on the surface.
