Yes, if the stone is too soft, it will indeed lift the tiles and
get underneath.  One possible solution is to use a heavier oil or
grease even to make the tiles more adhere to the glass surface.
I've never found it necessary to use a bag to protect the glass
as I am more desirous of avoiding folds in the bag causing a
whole line of lifted tiles.  A little bit of stone appearing
under tiles has happened and all I have done in that regard is to
just scrape it off with a trowel or putty knife and use that
material to fill in holes that may appear elsewhere on the tool.
Remember that I pull the tool off of the glass just as soon as it
starts cooling down from the chemical reaction to the water and
it is still pretty soft and the stone will take some abuse in
being lifted from one spot and applied to another.
