This seems like a good problem for FEM simulation. Is your model up
to doing a continuous back support? It would be nice to get an answer
for this question once and for all. It seems like the variables would
be 1) the irregularity of the padding, and 2) the springiness of the
pad, and 3) the thickness of the pad. It would probably be OK to
assume a perfectly flat mirror back and a pad of uniform springiness,
and model all the irregularities in the surface of the pad.
