Re: [ATM] grinding and polishing machine
The DC motor trick doesnt' give you the gearing torque multiplication that a pulley system will give you.
Bob May...........if these is the case then motor having torque say 1 unit with 1440 rpm and 1:240 reduction by pulleys will give output torque 240 unit with 6 rpm speed then torque increases 240 times with low speed .................is there no electrical drive system with similar advantage................I would like to know were could I put my efforts in electrical drives which motor could give high torque with low speed I remmber DC series giving these but they have problem with commutation at low speed will DC brushless motor of swithed reluctance stepper motor or any induction or synchronous motors with any speed control arrangment using solid state devices or anything .....is possible to have such high torque at low speed?which motor is ideal for these purpose?

There is a great advantage to the flailing about of a pulley

with the power the first time.
Electric motors on the 1/4 to 1'2HP range are what you pretty
much need for mirrors of that size and even a bit larger. Go
look up the Mirror-O-Matic machine for a very nice compact
version of a grinding machineand you will be happily supprised at
how compact the design is.
If you want to get fancy with motors, there are DC input motors
that will give a huge range of speeds just fron the controller
alone. The provblem tho with doing it this way is that the
torque is constant (or even going down at lower speeds) which is
contrary to what is really desired which is larger mirrors want
to go slower as they need more torque than a smaller mirror to be
ground and polished. The DC motor trick doesnt' give you the
gearing torque multiplication that a pulley system will give you.
