[ATM] grinding and polishing machine

Dear list I wanted to prepare a grinding and polishing machine ......I came accross this websight which describes a machine      http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1992JBAA..102..198N...............motor  but the pulley system is I feel not necessary when speed control of electrical drives is possible
  my question is which electrical drive is best suitable for revolving turntable at speed variation from 3 to 6 rpm and another electrical drive system which would change speed from 28 rpm to 42 rpm I intend to use two motors one for turntable another for stroke.
  there are different motors here which is best suitable for these purpose and how to calculate what rating of motor to take I shall grind and polish the 12" ,mirror size wont exceed 16" on these machine..........(the electrical power is 230volts AC, 50 hz here in India )
