You're the only one who posted a possibility.

Other than the aluminum, my scope has clear-coated wood, blue paint, black 
paint, black shroud, black plastic, and black velvet. With the red led 
flashlite and my eyes, the velvet is darkest of the six surfaces. With the 
longer-wavelength nite scope, the velvet is brighter than those other five. 
So I don't think your answer is the key. But thanks for trying!
