Sure, when looking thru hundreds of miles of air. But night vision devices 
use near-IR with good results over much shorter distances.
And as Jarvis noted, cameras intended for normal terrestrial use already 
have IR-blocking filters (because IR focuses at a different distance from 
visual).

I'll bet some enterprising members of this list could build their own night 
vision telescopes based on Meade's idea.
