There are publications from the late 1800's, maybe early 1900's
by George H. With, I believe from place called Hereford, UK. I
know of two articles I can offer in electronic form, but these
are both very short and no mention about the optics used more
than they were 8.5-12.25" Newts. There are some handmade drawings
of a comet, and brief mention of the appearance of the Moon with
an unsilvered speculum, but nothing revealing about the optics.
The simplicity of the comments, limited publications and small
size of the optics would be consistent with an amateur astronomer.
His name appears in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical
Society without any title, but it was typical for this journal
to specify essentially all titles an author possessed. This is
also consistent with an amateur. On the other hand, I pretty much
never specify my titles (I will not start today).
