Thanks to Dave and Vladimir for their thoughts. I did look in the archives and found considerable information on the topic. It seems that polishing is a problem, which has to be done with Indial ink instead of Cerium oxide. The India ink method is interesting. I have noticed that glass can be very finely polished using the ink from Sharpie pens.
