I think that the "tilt" of the image increases as the focal length gets
shorter. This could cause problems for eyepieces in addition to coma or
other aberrations.

I agree, f/5.4 is almost certainly too short for an off axis.  I think
the shortest I have seen is Jose Sasian's at about f/8 to f/10.  I'm not
just saying this to be an obstructionist fuddy duddy.  Several very well
educated optical engineers have been down this road.  Sasian is one of
them.  Dick Buchroeder is another.  If they can't get faster than f/8,
there is a good reason.
