Depends by what you mean by "flat".Ideal situation is
to get the back optically flat,but as long as the back
isn't grooved or has a wedge to it it can work.Did a
12 inch cass that used a 2.2" secondary of pyrex and I
just used the back as is.Wedge is the biggest
concern,just get a smooth surface say by grinding with
400 or 600 grit and polish till it's clear.
