I doubt that "group" thinks positive about wooden tool due to inherent
dimensional instability of wood. Several well documented substitute
techniques, like plaster, dental stone, cement and similar, are available
from archives or sites of list members.

Since you started with  slumped blank, 9.5 mm thick tiles would be OK to
finish the grinding, (though, 3/8" thickness for 2"x2" tiles sounds unusual
to me).

Regarding dilemma of ceramic versus porcelain tiles, I do not remember
reading
anybody changing ceramic tiles for porcelain after 220 or any other grit
grade.
You said that  blank and tool are well mated, There is no point to change
this.
