As far as I know, astigmatism can be the result of improper support of the
bottom piece, or too little ramdomness in moves (or both). Even if you do
heat the glass, when you make sure you grip it at another spot every few
strokes, the effect is spread out.
I continuously walk around the work, and let the top piece rotate in the
same direction, effectively twice the speed. Every two laps or so I also
rotate the bottom piece. Everything in irregular amounts.
I use a flat surface as a basis, with a layer of the foamy type of drawer
lining to egalise even more.

There is no astigmatism in my 10x3/4" mirror, did not finish the correction
though. Motivation vanished when i realised that my carry-on scope would
never be accepted as hand luggage. I made a Q&D 6" instead, which was ready
in a few days.
