You don't actually HAVE to use Ebony Star. For a lighter scope, most any glossy, bumpy formica-type surface will suffice. Perhaps you can find smaller pieces if you are not so picky about ES.
Another choice which is supposedly slipperier than ES is FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic). I've always used FRP for every sized scope. FRP is the very bumpy, slippery stuff you see on bathroom walls cuz graffitti cleans right off of it. Most Home Depot's carry it. Around here it is only ~$25 a sheet, cheaper than ES. Contact cement holds it on flat surfaces (sand the back first to rough it up). I use Super-Mend epoxy putty to hold it onto curved ALT bearings.
