I have had some success!

I took your advice and bought some guitar strings today.  I have just re-strung the spider with two guitar strings and also made sure that the wire is properly secured at the hub.  I was using screw heads to hold the wire down but they were not done up tight so I think the wire was slipping up and down a couple of threads.

There is still some tiny slippage but I think I can fix that now.  The whole thing feels much tighter than before.
