I use that antiskid material under the backs of mirrors (thick or 
thin) when polishing TOT.  But, the back of the mirror is ground flat 
(not slumped), and it rests on a very flat surface.  Works like a charm.

Of course, it will work under the tool too.  You might try it between 
the plaster and mirror just to see what happens.  Ideally the plaster 
and mirror curves would have ROCs that differ by the thickness of the 
antiskid material, but it might work fine if the mirror is not slumped 
to a fast focal ratio.
