[ATM] wire spiders
For those of you who might be interested - I finally settled on using 0.4 mm plastic coated beading wire for my 16'' wire spider, which I got from the craft section of a local department store. I found it much easier to work with and less brittle than guitar strings, but the main advantage is that I can (hopefully) use it to run a current through to power my secondary heater. I used Mel's design with two pieces of wire and the plastic coating means I can connect both positive and negative without shorting. The plastic coating melts off with a match or soldering iron allowing you attach to current sources.
Another hint which I use in my job as a music teacher on instruments - if you have small nuts & screws that you want to be able adjust but not slip (as on a wire spider), put a drop of clear nail polish on the thread. The "lock tight" stuff you get from the hardware store is often too strong for smaller nuts and bolts.
