Re: [ATM] Support for slumped mirror

Has anyone reading this ever applied the concave mold and pitch button
method to grind, polish, and figure a conical-back mirror TOT? I will be
starting such a project in the near future, and would like to hear from
anyone who has done anything similar in the past. In particular, I am
wondering how to make a plaster mold for such a beast, without incurring
"separation anxiety" at the last step (a cone won't slide across itself like
a sphere will, yes?)

The ancient way of supporting a THIN mirror may still be the best way. Using
a suitable backing (other mirror blank, well sealed hardwood disk, metal
etc), the ATM would attach the THIN disk to the backing plate with many
small dots of pitch (1/4 dia). The backing plate attachment resists quick
flexure while allowing long term changes to be accomodated by the pitch. A
slumped blank could be attached in this way to a concave molded dental
plaster backing plate to give the thin mirror blank the needed support.
