Mel's scope has a single ring too! There is no requirement that the 
wires must cross - stability calls for some not too small angle between 
the wires, so if you let them have a common origin at the cage, you 
could get the same angle by making the center support longer. The cost 
is of course an increased total height - but there is no obvious fixed 
angle necessary, cf a bike wheel. 

I would expect this requirement to be common to any wire spider 
configuration, so how would you work around it? One way would be making 
a lower sec mount with the adjustment screws at 45 deg to the tube axis 
- some people of Uppsala made a very neat, compact design (with 
removable secondary) but unfortunately I can't find anything about it 
on the web
