GO FOR IT!  my first mirror was a 16" x 7/8", and it turned out very well.
(Strehl .9+)  Yes, you will likely have less total time in the project if
you make an 8" first, but I made the same calculation you did, reached the
same conclusion, and don't regret it a bit.
