Jerry, you seem to know a lot about cooking glass in microwave ovens.   Can you please post more information, descriptions of the experiments you did.   We can much from both successes and failures.

The problem with microwave ovens is that the energy gets concentrated more
in some spots than others..(Witness the bacon burned at one end and raw on
the other). This spotty heating would likely cause severe hot spots in the
glass, hence some glass is not suitable for microwave use.

I think the gas or plasma provides an efficient capture and 'distribution'
of the heating energy.

Any hints on what the plasma is?

On a related note, I have used a microwave to heat small quantities of
pitch.  It is the glass container that heats and melts the pitch.  Perhaps
the glass could be heated without any particular gas or plasma filling the
void.
