The stick/slip is mostly from a lap that isn't in good contact with the
glass and that doesn't help matters. You want to keep the pressure on the
lap in an even fashion. If the lap is losing full contact then I'd suspect
that you're trying to rock the lap as you push it about on the glass. If
anything, you want to push from some point so that you feel that the point
at which the force points is pushing passes through the center of the lap.
This keeps the lap from rocking as it goes over the edge of the glass.
The other thing that makes the stick/sliping worse is when there is too much
water on the interface between the mirror and lap. You want to have to work
to move the lap and it only wants to move slowly. Forcing it to move
faster will suddenly make it slip and lose contact with the glass.
