Re: [ATM] Aluminizing

So, after re-coating, is the surface any better?

    Mark,
I think Beral coatings that are still in good shape after 30 or
40 or
even 10 years are a testament to how good they used to be. But that
was
Dudley Leroy Clausing back then. Now it's H.L. Clausing. Just
because it's
still the same family doesn't mean they still do things exactly the
way they
    used to.
Some people still swear by them. I've heard from others who've
had
problems. I had an 8" done by them a couple years ago. It looked
great at
first, but after less than a month, it already looked a little hazy.
I just
stripped it to have it re-coated by Spectrum. It wasn't horrible,
just not
what I wanted to settle for anymore.
I'm sure they still do good work, but as my experience showed
me,
they're not consistent. They are the cheapest I've seen, though.

It doesn't say so on their web site, but I think Clausing goes that
big.

They have been in business since 1927 and have a good reputation
among
amateurs. The last time their name came up on this list, there were
several favorable comments and no (that I can remember) negative
ones.
They have specifically advertised for amateur business since at
least
the 1950's. More than one atm (including me) has commented that
their
"Beral" trademark coatings seem to hold up quite well. With
reasonable
care, and a not too awful environment, ten years seems a minimum
lifetime. I have seen closer to 40 years on at least one mirror.
Of
course, if you live in a dusty alkaline desert, you may not get
that.
