Re: [ATM] considering different design
This is not exactly a new idea, it was published in Sky & Tel Gleanings column back in '93 or '94. In researching some old telescope ideas I made a photocopy of it, will post the exact date and page when I get back to work.
The original was called a Fundyscope after it's maker. It is a very interesting design, I have never seen one or heard reports of how well it functions. I would think that since you are sending an image to the primary from a perforated mirror, there has to be some sort of "obstruction" diffraction.
The design really opens up some interesting possibilities since the steering flat and primary don't have to be physically connected. Each could be mounted on a separate stand. Alignment wouldn't be too much more difficult than setting up a Focault tester I imagine. Anyone for a really LONG focus Newtonain?

Subject: [ATM] considering different design
I should start by saying I am fairly new to ATMing. I know most of you say
to start with a newtonian but I stumbled across this page
(www.customopticalsystems.com) and I feel the design is simple enough to
build. I am wondering if the prices he set for optical sets (under the ATM
section) are reasonable given that they are in canadian dollars? Or should I
attempt to polish the optics myself?
Another way to ask the question is can I build a better planetary telescope
for the same price?
thanks,
Mike
