RE: [ATM] bending square aluminium tube

Hello Dale,

You are right about the end pieces: they should be removed.
I don't know about bending with rollers, but using the wooden jig method, I
first bend a circle of more than 360 degrees (about 450 degrees). After that
I remove some 45 degrees of both sides.

By the way: I also made altitude bearings. But have not attached them yet,
but I think they will work very well. At least they look nice, have a good
regular shape and feel very strong.

The roller method seems promising but the tool is a lot more difficult to
make than the wooden jigs.
And when you are making only one or two telescopes, the effort of making a
rollertool does not seem worth the effort.
At the other hand: a wooden jig only gives a fixed radius and before you
start, you will never know exactly if the endresult has the exact radius

Good luck
Harro

Ok,
So, if I want to bend a 28 inch diameter out of 1 inch
square tubing, what size diameter should I make the
wheels and how far apart are they on the stationary
piece? I'm thinking of make altitude bearings for my ultralight 16" dob.

However this is starting to sound a lot harder than
what Jan posted using the fixed radius disk and
concave form.

Second question does this method bent up to the edge
of the stock or do you have to cut part of it off
after bending.
