Vladimir,
Thanks for the long quote.After I posted the message I
tried Google and came up with several hits.The best
was

One key point about the German comparison was the
small size of the test objects.Turns out that this
phase shifting is only used on small lenses.It seems 
you have to move it or the reference optics.
Graham seems to have a retro fit kit for some
interferometers.Not something the atm will use I
guess.

The material from Malacara was insightful on the
limitations of this test though.
