[ATM] what did I do wrong???

Charles,

To see Ronchi lines it does not matter if you cut off LED top (lens)
or not. Ronchi lines are very forgiving. But what is critical is the eye
position.
Eye pupil is several millimeters and if you do not know where the image is
it is
easy to miss the narrow cone of light from the image toward the eye.
Since the mentioned light cone spreads out it is best to look from far away
and when
reflected light is found, gradually get closer to the tester. Tester can
than be positionaly
adjusted to keep the source image as close to the source as your tester
construction permits.
Since Ronchi lines are examined from inside of ROC as well as from outside
it is important
to have tester travel axis aligned with mirror optical axis. If the source
image is traveling sideways
when tester travels longitudinally than alignment should be corrected until
longitudinal
tester travel keeps the image centered.
Regards
Vladimir.
