If you have access to the book:

I recommend you look through it.  Telescopes are meant to study objects
at very great distances.  When you study objects at relatively short
distances...the optical performance *might* be degraded.  Much of that
depends on the aperture and focal ratio of the telescope...and the above
book has some info on that to help you determine how far is 'far enough'
for your test pattern distance.
