I thought I had seen an article or journal paper describing an amateur 
buildable spectrograph, and sure enough here's a link to the preprint 
version: <http://www.arxiv.org/PS_cache/astro-ph/pdf/0202/0202233.pdf>. The 
article was published in the May 2002 Publications of the ASP.

This seems to do pretty much what you want, namely use a fiber train to 
feed a table top spectrograph. The article gives part numbers and details 
of machining techniques.
