If you haven't found it already you might find some useful information at 
the "Forum for Amateur AstroSpectroscopy", at 
<http://users.erols.com/njastro/faas/>. There are a couple articles about 
DIY spectrographs and some information about commercial alternatives, plus 
ideas for observing programs.

Wouldn't it be simpler to make a Cassegrain and avoid some of the problems 
of awkward balance?
