The channeling method that I've used in the past wasn't mentioned
in this thread: use a wood saw with soapy water lubricant. It
sounds like it won't work, but it does; it's not particularly good
for the saw, so an old abused panel saw from a yard sale is indicated,
not your prize Sandvik. Clean up with a chisel. I've done this
only against glass-backed laps, don't know about new-fangled dental
plaster. There's some danger of chipping, depending on the consistency
of the pitch.
26 bucks is a lot of bucks, the price of a fair bottle of whisky, if
I recollect.
I'm having a little trouble understanding what the big deal with laps
is. I'm not very experienced, true, but it never seemed to bother me.
Perhaps too much thought and worry is put into it.
