As to melting pitch.  If you are in a hurry a propane torch works. Also
helps get pitch off of your dental stone tool without contaminating your
pitch. BTW, this will also make your dental stone tool more receptive to
pitch. I melt my pitch in a coffee can over a Coleman camp stove. Channel
lock pliers make it easy to handle the hot can.  Leather gloves make it even
easier, but don't plan to use them for anything else later. It takes about
30 minutes to melt enough pitch for a 10 inch lap. Do it in a well
ventilated area.  A building separate from the one you live in works.(one
you wouldn't mind burning down)  Outdoors is better. Keep the burner low and
do not let it extend out from under the can.  A 3 pound(?) coffee can works
best.
