I don't use dams at all with my pitch pouring as the pitch never gets hot
enough to flow fast anywhere.  I just watch the melting (even playing with
the cold spots to get them to heat faster) and when the pitch is starting to
melt, it is time for the mold and warmed mirror to go on the top of the lap
in progress.
At 200F, even putting the pitch into water will allow the pitch to get hot
enough for the job.
