I built an equatorial mount using a single Kaydon Reli-Slim X bearing

supports both thrust and radial forces. Advantages of a single bearing per
axis are minimal machining and a very stiff compact shaft  and housing made
of aluminum. The large diameter very short shaft is one extreme of the
bearing configurations put forth by Porter in the ATM book series. I set the
bearing preload by differential thermal change in shaft and housing, then
filling the gap with Loctite anaerobic bearing adhesive.
