The thing that is more important is to make sure that things don't go over
the mirror or tool that can drop grit of any kind onto the surface.  At 120
grit, a piece of generic dirt won't affect anything but at 12 micron, it
will raise a nasty scratch.  With the fine grits, be sure to dust yourself
down when you start and let the dust settle before uncovering the grinding
surfaces.  I generally divide my grinding into coarse and fine grinding and
the division point is usually the start of the 25micron grit.
