Keep in mind that the stated particle sizes are not exact. They
are the mean +/- a large deviation. Take a look some time at
the SiC charts from Micro Abrasives. When you progress to a
finer grit, you still have larger particles, but they are
fewer in number. This in mind, one actually has a lot of
flexibility in cleanliness. I only separate coarse from
fine grinding and always end up with excellent surfaces in
terms of pits.
