Hi Pat,

I have done that many of times as a pre step before anodizing. It gives the
aluminum a very nice uniform matt look to the surface. Mix up 1/2 a
container of red devel drain cleaner in a 5 gallon bucket of water. Should
take only 5 to 10 min to etch a nice surface due to you having  already
sanded the part. If you use warm water it is even faster.
