ATM Pitch Laps

Hello ATM List,
I am about to go pour a pitch lap, using Kevin McCarthy's lap mold, and
burgundy pitch.
In all of my reading (remember I am an absolute neophyte in this hobby)
I read about all sorts of magic ingredients to add to the pitch mix, but
have never seen mention of adding the Cerium Oxide itself to the mix.
Wouldn't that insure that all parts of the lap in contact with glass
would have polishing compound available? Naturally additional water and
Cerium Oxide would be needed, but as a "start" I'd think adding some to
the witch's brew wouldn't hurt anything, would it? I won't try it until
I hear back from experienced list members, it just seemed like a good
idea to me at the time!
