The polishing pads will make the glass polish up faster.
You didn't say what grit size that you stopped at and then started with the
polishing.  Larger grit sizes will make the time a lot longer than with
finer grits.  In addition, failure to properly finish a grit size will make
things difficult as you don't get out all of the big pits from the previous
grit sizes and thus you may be trying to fill the Grand Canyon with a
child's toy shovel.
If you find some eyeglass polishing pads, use the finest grit that you
ground the mirror with on the pads rather than the rouge and the polish
(yes, it will polish rather than grind!) will come up a lot faster.
