I think it has more to do with massive objects warping space and the photon follows the warped space. As far as mass goes, when an electron drops to a lower 'orbit' and thus looses energy as a photon the atom shouldn't loose mass, only energy in this case, so the photon shouldn't need to have mass (this is my logic, as flawed as it is). This would not preclude the photon energy from being converted to a minuscule amount of mass later.
