Might also note that plywood can be curved if so desired.  Layers of 1/8"
plywood (3 layer stuff) can be steamed and placed around a form and a second
or even a third layer glued ove that.
When you start applying formers and other strengthing stuff, it is always
wise for appearance sake to curve and taper stuff.  It is amazing how much
prettier something gets to be when you spend a few moments taking a piece of
1x3 lumber and hollowing out the center so it is thinner and then rounding
(or better off, doing an elliptical shape) the end that sticks out.  The I
beam shape will be lighter, prettier and almost as strong as the original
piece of lumber.
