I use both low sodium sodium and mercury for my fringe testing.  The sodium
fixture and lamp came to me via a friend, can't tell you what to expect for
cost, but it is most likely high.  I use one of the nasty mercury garage
driveway lamps for my other fringe tester.  I use a green plastic for a
filter which makes a great monochromatic light source.  It is very
affordable and easily found at home improvement stores.
