We built several large (~8 x 10") liquid crytal shutters back in
the 80's for NASA, for a satellite tracking experiment. The shutters
don't actually become opaque, just scatter light. This has the effect
of working like a shutter if the field is mostly black, but all of the light
is diffused over the inside of the camera. When 'clear', the shutters still
scatter
some light & thus may add some background when in the open state.
It worked for our case, where we were interrupting the trailed image of
a moving object like a satellite. The 'open/close' times were about 10ms
IIRC.
