Re: ATM Another dangerous thought

What about all the "obsolete" hard drives hitting the garbage and junk bins
throughout the world. I've found several sub 2GB HDD in the last few weeks
just watching the roadside refuse as I ride my bike to work. They all have
highly accurate, extremely fast, fairly long stroke linear motors or "voice
coil" head positioners built into them. I've been cannibalizing them for
the powerful magnet inside but they could be used to move small things like
a mirror or a prism. If you're looking for something with near audio freq.
range rate of movement, precision alignment and more "travel" than a speaker
coil, these may be an alternative. They're available in all different sizes
and designs. You don't really know what you'll get until you crack the
drive open and look inside. They're usually pretty easy to remove as an
assembly and thus reinstallable in some other role. I'm sure the driver
circuits will take some doing to figure out but nothing more than the
drivers for a speaker coil would.

Just a thought.....
