Yup, that sounds painfully familiar.  You must scrape away a ring of beeswax all the way around the plug to a depth of roughly 1/2 mm or so.  There must not be any beeswax in contact with the lap or you'll have a nice mess.  When you press out the lap you'll get a raised ring.  Either scrape off the ring or move the lap around while pressing to press the ring back down.
